SAPS arrests suspects and recovers stolen firearms

Springs SAPS recovered a number of firearms linked to past cases during the raid.

Seven suspects linked to the gang that has been terrorising areas of Ekurhuleni, Delmas (Mpumalanga) and North West were arrested on Thursday.

One of the suspects was shot and arrested during the incident. This is after the crime prevention team followed up on information regarding a notorious gang.

The information led the team to an address in Springs where three unlicensed firearms were recovered, along with two rifle magazines and a white Hyundai Tucson.

The car was confirmed to be a wanted vehicle, as police had been searching for it in connection with a hijacking.

Following an altercation with law enforcement, the suspect was injured and is recovering in hospitalised.

Springs police spokesperson, Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said further information led the team to another address in Springs where the key to the Tucson was found. This led to the subsequent arrest of another suspect.

“A large number of cellphones and three reflector jackets were also found. One firearm is suspected to be the one that was taken from a murder scene where a reaction officer was murdered was also recovered,” he explained.

Tshabalala added further investigation led them to a black Ford Focus used in the murder case as a getaway vehicle.

“Members later received information regarding the whereabouts of the vehicle and on arrival, the vehicle was recovered and upon testing the original engine number came up to be positive,” he added.

Further investigation will be conducted.
