What to do as 16 Days of Activism approaches

Victims of domestic and gender-based violence should know they are not alone. There are avenues created to help them.

The 16 Days Of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign is fast approaching, as it runs nationally from November 25 to December 10.

Leratong Women’s Shelter in Springs offers shelter to women and children who are victims of domestic or GBV.

“The victim should have a protection order or a case opened against her abuser for us to help,” said social worker Lerato Kamal.

The shelter offers services such as counselling, health work, skills development, court support and help with children such as transportation to and from school and supervised homework assistance.

Springs SAPS Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said all domestic and GBV incidents should be first reported to the police.

“There is a specially designated GBV desk at the Springs police station with an officer for victims of GBV that caters to women, children and men who have become victims of abuse,” said Tshabalala.

The Victim Empowerment Centre offers a safe environment to help those who are victims of sensitive matters such as sexual assault.

“It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere to make the victims feel safe,” added Tshabalala.

There are ways residents are able to fight GBV in their communities.

The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities offered the following tips for residents to fight GBV:
• Reject and report abusers

• Do not protect abusers – report them

• Sign the pledge against GBV.

• Do not engage in abusive activities

• Challenge and denounce cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities and stereotypes

• Be sensitive and supportive to GBV victims – share helpful information and support causes in Springs

• Seek personal help to change harmful behaviours such as alcohol and substance abuse

• Teach children values of gender equality

• Protect children from exposure to violence and harmful content on the internet and social media, including pornography and sexual solicitation.
