Here’s what to know when buying a home for the first time

Buying a new home needn't be frustrating if you follow these simple tips.

Many first-time home buyers find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to looking for and choosing the property that will serve as their first home.

Things become even trickier because they do not know where to start when it comes to their journey. The Springs Advertiser caught up with real estate specialist Dorette Kruger who gave us her five top tips to use when preparing to buy your first home.

Make sure you have a great credit score
Find a trusted bond originator to assist you in this.

Find an agent
Finding the right agent is very important. Keep in mind that this is the biggest asset you will most likely ever purchase.

You also need someone that will be transparent with all there is to know about your chosen property and the areas and all of its surroundings. It is also important to choose a local agent as they will know property trends in their area best.

Keep to a budget
When buying your first home, you must set up and keep to a budget. Overcommitting is never a wise decision and although you might be excited about finding the ‘perfect’ home, rather spend less and gradually renovate and personalise your new home.

Familiarise yourself with the costs involved
There are a few costs involved when purchasing a property. The transfer fee, bond registration fee, transfer duty (when purchasing over R950 000), moving costs, and municipal account registration.

Make sure you are aware of and can afford all needed before starting your house-hunting journey.

Location, location, location
Choosing the right location is of utmost importance. Location is the greatest factor to take into consideration when investing in property.

You need to make sure the location you want to purchase it is a viable area. Choosing an honest, reputable agent will benefit you greatly in this.

They will advise you and make sure you are not overpaying for your home and that if the need arises, you will be able to resell with value-added and not lost.
