Officials donate school shoes

Mabore Molokela, the event’s organiser, said the donation was long overdue.

Officials from Modderbee Correctional Services, the EMPD, JMPD, SANDF, EMS and departments of agriculture and justice, donated 88 pairs of school shoes to learners at Albertina Sisulu Primary School on Thursday.
Mabore Molokela, the event’s organiser, said the donation was long overdue.
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. I have mixed emotions because I wanted to do this project since the first Covid-19 lockdown. I am glad it has finally happened,” said Molokela.

Col Lettie Mthethwa hands Asilakhe Ndawonde, a Grade One learner from Albertina Sisulu Primary School, a new pair of school shoes.

“We have come to give love, hope and warmth to the learners. On our way to work at Modderbee prison, we see the learners. Some of them are wearing worn-out shoes or colourful shoes.
“And it is winter now, we want them to be warm. We want to keep them in school,” she said.
Learners of the school come from the Lindelani informal settlement and Kingsway.

For the donation, the officials were divided into teams during an inter-departmental health and wellness sports day in March. The officials participated in different sporting codes at Modderbee sports grounds.
The gathering was the first since the hard lockdown in 2020.
“We want the children to know there are people who care,” added Molokela.
School principal Simphiwe Dywili appreciated the effort of the officials.

Simphiwe Dwyli, principal of Albertina Sisulu Primary School, is honored by the officials’ efforts.

“When we started the school in 2012, I only had 11 teachers and we had to attend to more than 490 learners. Some of the parents in the area did not trust that we could do a good job. But we were determined to prove them wrong,” he explained.
Dywili is proud of the culture of dedication and excellence that has been instilled in the learners by the staff.
“We are a non-fee school but we strive to be the school of choice in our area,” he said.
Dywili also appreciates that his school is the beneficiary of such a project.
“Ordinary men and women in uniform, out of their own pockets, from the little that they have decided to make this donation. To me that is good. And because you are doing good you will be blessed. Thank you very much,” he added.
