Getting to know Boikhutso Dlamini

We are facing an electricity problem in this country and I want to help solve it.

Olympia Park School head boy Boikhutso Dlamini (19) wants to improve Olympia Park’s image and encourage more parents to enrol their children at the school.
How did you make sure you got this position?
I pushed myself really hard. I was the head boy last year as well, so I knew I had to impress them the first time round.
What extra duties do you have now as head boy?
I am responsible for the school’s feeding scheme and making sure it is carried out successfully. I also encourage learners in my township to go to the clinics, where I provide them with emotional support.

What change would you like the see at the school during your time as head boy?
I really want to see this school drug-free. People have a certain image about this school in their minds that they hear from other people: that it’s a bad school and people should stay away from it. I want to change this image and encourage people to enrol their children here because it really is a great school.
What are the biggest challenges you face as head boy?
The hardest thing is to uphold the rules in the school. Some learners don’t like rules and so they rebel by doing just what they want. I want to hold them and the school to a certain standard, and sometimes that can be quite difficult.
Who have been your biggest supporters?
My family and teacher liaison officers, Laurika Lazarides and Nico Willems. But at the end of the day, I am self-motivated and set the bar high for myself.

What hobbies outside of school do you enjoy?
I enjoy playing cricket, it’s my favourite sport. I also enjoy science and technology and learning about them, and I have been cooking a lot lately.
What do you want to do after matriculating?
I want to go into agriculture and electricity manufacturing, if I can. We are facing an electricity problem in this country and I want to help solve it. I also want to see us using more environmentally friendly ways of producing electricity and saving our environment.
