War memorial in a sorry state

"People have no respect and I feel ashamed when I drive past it."

The Springs War Memorial, once an iconic monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the First World War, has been completely neglected.
Litter is strewn across the grass surrounding the memorial and the once prestigious copper dome of the memorial has long been stripped.
A golden plaque bearing the names of the heroes and a rifle that was suspended from the ceiling have been missing for years.
Vagrants have moved into the memorial, deterring any potential visitors who wish to pay tribute to the fallen heroes.

Security is non-existent, with only a small green fence surrounding the monument.
“The place looks like a dumpsite. People have no respect and I feel ashamed when I drive past it,” said a resident.
The Advertiser reported on the issue last year when ward councillor Dean Stone explained the problem has persisted since 2010, and the municipality has done very little to address the issue.

Piles of refuse surround the monument.

Various clean-up efforts have attempted to restore the memorial to its former glory.
However, their hard work is soon nullified by those who have no respect for their surroundings.
Comment from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
