In 2007, Karabo Maupa (now Mbonani) was the first Teen Miss Ekurhuleni crowned at the star-studded event held at Emperors Palace.
Since then she has won numerous titles, including Miss Republic of Azania, Miss Rivonia and Miss Mamelodi Sundowns Gauteng and the National First Princess.
What have been some of the highlights of your pageant career?
I have graced the pages of various magazines and been on billboards for News Café and Mowana Spa nationwide too. I am now a renowned judge with 12 years’ experience within the pageant industry. I’ve sat on prestigious national panels as head judge at pageants, such as Miss United Continents, Miss Teenager Universe SA and Miss Grand South Africa.

When did you make the move from pageantry to more behind the scenes?
I retired from competitive modelling in 2015 after being crowned second princess at Miss Heritage South Africa. Through the Miss and Teen Miss Ekurhuleni SA programme, I started a youth leadership programme with the aim of empowering all the finalists. The programme, which includes the development of emerging leaders through a series of seminars, workshops and other local project initiatives, focuses on personal development, public relations and personal branding, personal finance, team building, public speaking, health and fitness, and beauty. The work seeks to empower individuals who want to improve their personal lives and their communities, as well as give a platform for beneficiaries and the causes close to their hearts.
Is pageantry solely about physical beauty?
No. Since its inception, Miss and Teen Miss Ekurhuleni have raised awareness and funds for charities such as Amazing Grace Children’s Home and the SPCA. It is a platform that sparks youth activism and encourages young women to be catalysts of change and development while providing a platform that magnifies each contestant’s talents. We believe an investment in a woman is an investment in a nation. We are in search of two wonderful, dynamic ladies to become ambassadors for Ekurhuleni.
