• Springs labelled a racist town
The town was labelled as a racist town by a Johannesburg weekly newspaper in an article about racism in the East Rand.
The journalist wrote that a secretary at a local health facility has separate toilets for black and white staff.
It also alleged the Springs Country Club was an all-white club and at the Far East Rand Hospital black patients were sleeping on the floor while the wards in the white section were empty. All the facilities accused of racism vigorously denied the claims made against them.
