Inquest docket opened after bodies found at Grootvlei

The bodies were brought to the surface after 16:00 and police estimate they may have been in the hole for more than a year.

Springs police have opened an inquest docket after two bodies were found at Grootvlei Mine on Tuesday afternoon.
Local police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora explained a man, who was at the site to collect steel, called the police at around midday when he discovered the remains.
The man told police he saw a long steel rod sticking out of the ground near a hole and when he tried to pull the rod out, he saw two male bodies at the bottom of the hole.

The hole, in which the bodies were found, was muddy and filled with water. The leg of one of the men was badly damaged.
The bodies were brought to the surface after 16:00 and police estimate they may have been in the hole for more than a year.
It could not be determined if the men were murdered or if their death was an accident.
