GWRI to change the landscape of women’s rugby

These residents will be given the opportunity to train and study with highly trained professionals from all over the country.

The Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute (GWRI) unveiled and opened their first training hostel in Springs on Thursday afternoon.

This hostel is part of GWRI’s Women’s High-Performance Rugby Career Development Programme and is the first of it’s kind in Africa. It aims to attract and develop some of the best female rugby players in the country.
The programme is also heavily involved to find talented women from all over the country.
The new facility boasts 24 rooms which can house 68 athletes permanently.
These residents will be allowed to train and study with highly trained professionals.

Residents will also be allowed to acquire a sports administration academic qualification while training at the centre.
To produce a competitive team, the centre will be hosting friendly practice matches on a field next to the centre.
When the government allows competitive rugby matches to resume, the women will play under the women’s amateur Valke Rugby Union club structure, which includes a total of 16 female teams.
“We are setting something incredible in motion with this centre. The work being done is ground-breaking and we will be going very far,” said the head of the institute, Lucretia Aucamp.

National Women’s Development manager Jaco Coetzer said: “This centre will not only be a giant leap for women’s rugby but I hope it will benefit women in the long run by learning to be more assertive.
“We will help these girls become some of the best players in the country and the world.
“These girls will also be taught coaching so that they can use what they have learned to inspire other girls in schools and townships to realise their dreams and goals.”
With the women’s Rugby World Cup kicking off later in the year in New Zealand, the GWRI will be hard at work to produce the strongest team they possibly can.
