Springs Boys’ High School pays tribute to fallen comrades

Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who died in the line of duty.

Springs Boys’ High School held their annual Remembrance Day on Wednesday afternoon.
Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who died in the line of duty.
It is observed on November 11 to recall the end of hostilities of the First World War in 1918.
Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
“This is why at the 11th hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month has forever been associated with remembering those who have lost their lives in service of their country,” said Suzanne Shaw, a teacher at the school, in her Remembrance Day address.

Representatives from organisations such as the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH), Memorable Order of Tin Hats Women’s Auxiliary (MOTHWA), SA police vets, SA Legion, Sea Cadets and the families and friends of those who have died came together to pay their respects.
In her Remembrance Day address, Shaw spoke about the power of forgiveness and used Eric Lomax, a British prisoner of war who was held in a Japanese prison camp and tortured after the British surrendered in Singapore during World War Two, as an example.
Lomax was able to forgive his captor for his treatment of him and his fellow prisoners.
Shaw emphasised how forgiveness is a blessing for the person showing mercy and the one receiving it.
She closed her address with a quote by François Fénelon which said: “All wars are civil wars because all men are brothers.”
