Police foil suspects’ plans

The suspects face charges of attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and impersonating police officers.

Three men who allegedly intended to rob a shop and a cigarette delivery van were arrested in Springs on Tuesday afternoon.
Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for local police, said the arrests were part of an operation aimed at curbing crime in the Springs area.
The operation was led by visible policing head Col Eric Mhlongo and operation commander Lt Col Rajesh Ramlall in conjunction with sector managers and crime-prevention officers.

“Police received information about three occupants in a blue Corolla sedan, with blue police lights, who intended to rob a shop and a cigarette delivery in the CBD.
“Without any hesitation, police rushed to the scene and noticed a vehicle which fitted the description.
“Police managed to apprehend the suspects at the corner of Third Street and Fourth Avenue, and recovered one firearm with seven bullets, blue police lights and a police radio from inside the vehicle.
“The operation yielded good results when the suspects felt the heat of the law,” said Ramphora.

The arrested men, aged between 31 and 42, were detained at the Springs Police Station.
They face charges of attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and impersonating police officers.
