Armed robbers target security guards at abattoir

Cash, cellphones stolen from security guards at Morgan Abattoir

Security guards at Morgan Abattoir in Geduld were robbed at gunpoint on Saturday evening.

Springs Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora said three guards were on duty when one of them heard a strange noise outside the guardroom.

When the guard went to check, he saw five people, some of whom were armed with guns, searching one of his colleagues, while his other colleague was running from the scene.

The robbers then asked the guards if there was a panic button.

The pair was searched and the robbers took a wallet which contained R450 and the guard’s cellphones.

After taking the men’s possessions, the robbers dragged the guards to a truck parked on the premises and forced them inside.

They were rescued by ADT security guards who were alerted to the robbery by the guard who had managed to run away.

An inspection of the office revealed nothing had been taken.

The value of the stolen cellphones and money taken amounted to R10 000.
