Old Boys field burnt down

Springs Old Boys cricket field set alight

The main cricket field at Springs Old Boys Club has been scorched, damaging the cricket nets.

Kelly Clarke says the first fire broke out last Sunday, and a second fire began later in the week.

Most of the field has been burnt and the flames almost moved toward the bowling green.

The cricket nets have suffered damage with the flames melting some of the practice nets.

Clarke suspects that the first fire was set deliberately inside the field, but that the other flames could have come from outside.

A nearby pine tree was burning outside the field on Saturday which suggests the fire could have come from there.

“We are struggling with the this lockdown.

“With no customers, the club cannot generate revenue, and this is the last thing we need.”

According the Clarke, the club has suffered from vandalism and loitering since the lockdown was enforced.

Loiters walk into the club and drink on the grandstands.

The practice nets, as well the majority of the field, are scorched

Clarke says they are looking at installing an alarm system to help with these security issues.

Cricket and soccer are the two main sports played at the club, but these sports are forbidden under the current lockdown.

The bowling, however, could resume soon.

“We want this club to be up and running as soon as possible.

“We want people to come here and enjoy themselves like they have been doing for so many years.”

Clarke did not report the incident to the police, but did lay a complaint about the loitering and vandalism to Ward Clr Thulani Simelane.
