Ward councillors there to facilitate registration for food parcels
There seems to be come confusion about the recently launched food bank with regards who can benefit and what the role of your ward councillor is.
The launch of the much-need food bank last Tuesday by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzandile Masina was greatly welcomed by many.
However, in the days since, there has been some confusion as to how the registration process for the food parcels works and what the role of the ward councillor is.
People are also asking who the food bank is meant to serve.

The food bank is not meant for Sassa recipients as Sassa already has a food parcel distribution programme for their clients.
The food bank is for those who have found themselves unable to put food on the table as they are not allowed to work due to current lockdown regulations.
For example, waiters and people who work in the construction industry.
To register for the food bank you must contact your ward councillor.

Ward 76: Shadow Shabangu – 082 454 6975
Once your ward councilor has received your request, they will pass it on the the Department of Social Development (DSD).
They (DSD) in turn will send social workers to your house for an inspection and if it is found that you do need a food parcel, you will get it.
The DSD will deliver your food.
The councilor’s only role is to pass on your name to the DSD, not deliver food.
