Police officers unharmed after shoot-out with suspect

The suspect will face charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.

A suspect was arrested after a shoot-out with police last Sunday at the Everest informal settlement.

The arrest came after a security guard had his gun stolen while sleeping in his friend’s car by an armed suspect.

The victim and his friends were at a tavern in Everest at the time of the incident.

Two policemen from the Springs Police Station went to the tavern in an unmarked police van and spotted the suspect with the gun.

Const Mbunda attempted to confront the suspect, at which point the suspect drove off while shooting at Mbunda, who returned fire.

As the suspect passed Const Zwane’s vehicle he pointed his gun at Const Zwane, who then fired two shots at the suspect while inside his bakkie.

The two policemen chased the suspect until they reached the sports ground where the suspect collapsed.

Const Zwane found the gun next to the suspect, which appeared to be the gun that was stolen earlier from the security guard.

An investigation on the scene revealed the magazine only had eight rounds left.

The suspect was taken to Far East Rand Hospital, where it was discovered he had sustained a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen, with the bullet entering on the left side and exiting on the right side, by the hip area.

The police also performed a gunshot residue test on the suspect before he was taken to the operating theatre.

The suspect will face charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.

The police were not injured during the arrest.
