McLuckie dies at 61

He was born on March 2, 1958, to Chick and Margaret McLuckie and had two sisters, Beverley and Gail.

Well know Springsite Ian McLuckie, died on Christmas Day at the age of 61, while on holiday at Hlalanathi in the Drakensberg.

A memorial service was held for McLuckie on January 17 due to his sister having to fly in from the UK and many of his close friends being on leave over December.

He was born on March 2, 1958, to Chick and Margaret McLuckie and had two sisters, Beverley and Gail.

The family lived in Casseldale, Springs, where McLuckie attended Strubenvale Primary.

The family then moved to Selcourt where he completed primary school.

According to his sister Beverley, from a very young age McLuckie took a huge interest in sport.

“Our parents were avid tennis players and dad played league cricket.

“This all took place at Daggafontein Mine Club.

“Family weekends were spent playing and watching sport and swimming at the club.”

McLuckie was encouraged to take part in all the sporting activities the club had to offer.

“When Dagga Mine closed most of the members moved across to Grootvlei Mine Club where McLuckie participated in many swimming galas and tennis competitions.

“He played league tennis for many years and then went on to play squash, a game he loved and encouraged his daughters to play.”

In 1975, McLuckie joined the SA Air Force and served for two years.

He continued playing his sport while serving in the air force.

His first job after leaving the air force was at Anodized Labels and Signs.

He later joined PG Glass where he became branch manager and after this opened his own glazing business, East Rand Glass, in Benoni.

As a scholar and young man, McLuckie served on many sport and community committees, such as Interact, Rotaract, Round Table and Springs Country Club sport committees, says Beverley.

“Golf became Ian’s game of choice.

“He loved the game and played very well.

“Ian was very involved at Springs Country Club and served as golf captain during this time.”

He married Muriel Twomey in 1979 and the couple celebrated their 40th anniversary last year.

McLuckie and Muriel have three daughters, Shona, Megan and Kirsty, and four grandchildren, Taylin, Gaby, Keegan and baby Carter.

“My brother was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.

“He was well loved by all of his family and friends,” Beverley says.

“He had a wonderful sense of humour and was always keen to share a joke or witty story.

“His acquaintances became friends and he would always go the extra mile to help a buddy.

“Ian’s dream was unfinished but his legacy will live on forever.”
