Community takes cemetery problems into own hands

Residents feel that the cemetery can be made safer with security improvements, such as better gates and electric fences.

The Geduld Cemetery is still in a terrible state, but Thulani Simelane and the Geduld CPF plan to make it a safer place.

Since 2016, the Advertiser has reported on the vandalism the cemetery is suffering from.

This ranges from desecrated graves to a missing boundary fence, where the palisades have been stolen.

Geduld residents feel the cemetery is unsafe at night due to vagrancy and other criminal activities taking place in the area.

Residents feel the cemetery can be made safer with security improvements, such as better gates and electric fences.

Ward councillor Thulani Simelane says: “The Geduld CPF has decided to take action to make the cemetery safer.

“Every Sunday we will have a community patrol to clean up and make the cemetery safer by keeping guard and patrolling the area.

“In this way, people will be able to visit their dead relatives without feeling unsafe.

“People need to respect this graveyard and need to understand that it is part of their history, and shouldn’t just leave the cleaning in the hands of the metro.”
