Metro responds to Markville Flats lift issue

"The metro is at the final stage of awarding the lifts tender to a successful bidder.”

In response to an article titled More empty promises for Markville Flats residents, published on January 14, the metro’s divisional head of communications and media relations, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, has responded with the following statement.

“A tender to install, set-up, decommission, commission and maintain lifts in various metro rental buildings, namely Delhi Court, Andries Scribante, Roxanna Mansions, Karachi Court, Silverkroon, Tweedy Flats, Markville Flats, Pauline Devise and Deneys Conradie was advertised on September 27, 2019, and closed on October 9, 2019.

“The tender is at the final stage of the appointment of a contractor.”

When asked about the approximate time of arrival of the elevator, Cebekhulu says: “The project to install, set-up, decommission, commission and maintain lifts in various metro rental buildings is expected to commence in the next financial year: 2020/21.”

Cebekhulu also says: “The metro has committed a budget to install, decommission, commission and maintain lifts in nine metro-owned buildings.

“Markville Flats forms part of the nine listed buildings.”

One of the major concerns of the residents of Markville Flats is the possibility of a resident injuring themselves on the numerous flights of stairs many of them have to climb to reach their flats.

To this, Cebekhulu says: “Tenants, mostly elderly residents, are urged to take extra precautionary measures when ascending and descending the staircase.

“The metro is at the final stage of awarding the lifts tender to a successful bidder.”
