Pass rate for Springs schools drops

The majority of the schools in Springs saw a drop in their pass rates compared to the previous year.

The Springs Muslim School matrics proved themselves to be the exception with their 100% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate exams.

Springs Muslim School’s 17 matrics achieved a 100% pass rate for the 12th year in a row.

They also achieved a 100% bachelor’s pass rate for the third year in a row.

Additionally the school was part of 31 schools out of 890 schools in Gauteng that achieved a 100% pass rate from 2015 to 2019.

The school also achieved 29 distinctions, which is an increase from the 22 they achieved last year.

Principal Mohammed Asvat says their excellent results are a result of the learners’ and teachers’ hard work and the support of the parents.

Springs Boys High School had 137 learners writing the exams and obtained a 97.01% pass rate. They have improved from 96.3%.

“I am very pleased with the final results.

“I would like to thank the boys, teachers and parents for their joint efforts.

“I wish all matriculants from 2019 all the best in their future.

“They now have the duty to go out into the country and make a difference,” says principal Diane Freeman.

The school achieved 54 distinctions in total.

Springs Girls’ High School, after years of maintaining a 100% pass rate, dropped to 99.3% in the 2019 NSC exams.

The school had 145 learners who collectively achieved 80 distinctions.

They achieved 98 bachelor’s passes.

“This achievement is a result of consistent and extensive hard work and commitment from Grade Eight.

“Our team of educators have used their expertise to encourage, motivate and develop the Class of 2019.

“It is a team effort by the teachers and learners that has paid off.

“We are proud of you, Class of 2019.

“Esto Perpetua!” says principal Angela Jones.

Springs Secondary School achieved a 90% pass rate, which is a slight decrease from last year’s 95% pass rate.

136 learners wrote the final exams and they achieved 39 distinctions between them.

Deputy principal Mahendra Papa says they are pleased with their pass rate.

“Even though there is a slight drop in the pass rate, it is better than what we expected,” says Papa.

Olympia Park School had a bigger group of matric learners in 2019 and of the 29, 26 passed their final exams.

The school got one distinction.

Deputy principal Petro du Plessis says as a school they are satisfied with their results.

“The learners worked hard and the teachers did their best,” says du Plessis.

Matric results for Springs schools

• Springs Muslim School maintained their 100% pass rate from the previous year.

• Hoërskool Johan Jurgens’ pass rate increased from 99.2% in 2018 to 100% in 2019.

• Dr Wk du Plessis Skool’s pass rate is 63.0%, a decrease from 88.6% in 2018.

• Eureka High School’s pass rate decreased from 77.23% to 68.1%.

• Hoërskool Hugenote’s pass rate is 97.2%, down from 99% achieved in 2018.

• Jameson Girls High School had a massive drop in their pass rate from 80.5% in 2018 to 52.4% in 2019.

• Olympia Park School also had a decrease in their pass rate from 95% to 89.7%.

• Protea Skool/School’s pass rate decreased from 87.0% in 2018 to 85.3% in 2019.

• Springs Boys High School pulled up their pass rate from 96.3% in 2018 to 97.1% in 2019.

• Springs Girls High School saw a drop in their pass rate from 100% in 2018 to 99.3% in 2019.

• Springs Secondary School’s pass rate dropped from 95.9% to 90.4%.

• Springs Technical School followed the downward trend and saw their pass rate drop from 91.3% in 2018 to 87.3% in 2019.
