Naming process starts in Skoonplaas

“We are here to help ourselves and to allow the people here to get help if they need it.”

In their ongoing attempts to provide the people of Skoonplaas with street names, Chelsea Ndolvu and other members of Planact conducted a meeting in Skoonplaas on Wednesday to finally get the naming process underway.

Skoonplaas residents feel that they are not being recognised by the metro and that by naming the streets the metro will acknowledge their existence.

But most importantly, these nameless streets leave them helpless in cases of emergencies when they need the police or an ambulance.

Senior programme coordinator Mike Makwela says: “The people of this community battle when they need an ambulance or the police.

“Without street names, ambulances take very long to find the people who are in need.

“We also hope that we can be provided with electricity once we are formalised.”

Resident and community leader Albert Mkhabela says: “We are hoping that the process will go smoothly and that we can successfully engage with the community.

“We are here to help ourselves and to allow the people here to get help if they need it.”

Planact drew up a map and a questionnaire which they gave to the community who gave suggestions on the names they thought would be most appropriate.

Wednesday was a trial run and Makwela says he hopes that they will settle on names for all the streets by Saturday.

They will also be naming the taxi rank and the graveyard.

After the naming process has been completed, Planact will take their suggestions to the metro in hopes that they will recognise this community.
