Cats and dogs are the favourite furry addition to any family home. While they can be the best companions, understanding their nature will go a long way in ensuring that they are healthy and comfortable. Here are some tips and tricks geared towards making your life and your pet’s life happier.
1. Separate your cat’s drinking water from their food
Most cat owners should know that cats do not like to drink water that is close to their food. They feel like the water might be contaminated and will refuse to drink it. Move your cat’s water to a different location than where you feed them. This will prevent your cat from dehydrating and developing illnesses like kidney disease.
2. Make your dog a refreshing summer snack
You can keep your dog from getting bored and overheated this summer by preparing an epic snack that they can also play with. Freeze water, chicken broth with carrots, toys and bones in a round cake tin. This will keep your dog refreshed and busy for hours.
3. Tag your indoor cat correctly
If you have an indoor cat, put your cat’s name as well as “indoor cat” around their tag so that if it gets lost or anyone finds it outside, they’ll know it’s supposed to be indoors. Don’t forget to put your number on the tag as well so that they may call you if your cat is found.
4. Get rid of fleas on your dogs or cats with dishwashing liquid
Dishwashing liquid can be your secret weapon against fleas on your pets and around your house. You can add a few drops in your dog’s bath. Mix one tbsp of dishwashing liquid with 2 cups of water. Pour the mixture in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray all over the carpet, pets’ bedding, upholstery and floors. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
5. Try the 5-second dog-walking rule
If you would like to check if it’s too hot to walk your dog on the street or pavement, place the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. If you can’t hold it there comfortably for 5 seconds, it’s probably too hot for your dog to handle.
6. Check your dog or cat’s collar size
As your pet grows older and bigger, make sure you check that their collar still sits comfortably around their neck. Don’t forget to adjust the collar. You should be able to fit two fingers in between them and their collar to test.
