Unfortunately, the fire flared up again around 2.30am on Sunday morning and destroyed what was left of the house.

An elderly couple was left without a home after a fire ripped through the house on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday morning.

According to Frik Grobler, vice-chairperson of the Horseshead CPsF, the fire started at around 4pm on Saturday.

The couple’s son was at home at the time with his girlfriend and they were not injured in the fire.

“We managed to get everyone out and had to break the gate to get to the animals.

“Thanks to the quick response of the Strubenvale, Horseshead and Casseldale CPsF, the fire was contained and we prevented it from spreading to the neighbour’s house.

“The fire department also responded quickly to our call,” says Grobler.
