Wisdom imparted at Women’s Day celebration

“It’s something you do out of love and passion for your country.”

As part of celebrating Women’s Day, Springs SAPS held its annual “Take a child to work day” on Thursday afternoon at the Indoor Sport Centre.

Springs Mall, McDonald’s and members of the Department of Community Safety gathered at the centre to speak to high school learners from all over Springs about the importance of education and staying away from drugs and crime.

Although the talk was primarily aimed at girls, boys were also encouraged to heed the advice.

Amoret D’ Arrigo, marketing manager of Springs Mall says: “We really just want learners to come and see the environment that the police work under so that they can see that it is not too scary and is actually very diverse.”

There were refreshments on offer and DJs provided music.

The event commemorates August 9, 1956, when a group of brave women marched to the Union Buildings, to deliver petitions against the carrying of passes.

Members of the police explained the joys and privileges of being a police officer.

“It’s something you do out of love and passion for your country”, says colonel Marinda Brand.

Department of Community Safety member Elizabeth Sithole gave a strong message about how the use of drugs ruins many young lives.

“When you are caught with drugs, even if you are under 18, you will be arrested and put in prison.

“And when you are in there you are with murderers and rapists, even in Juvenile prison.

“You will also have a criminal record and it will be very, very difficult for you to find a job. And that’s when people resort to crime”, says Sithole.

The staff present at the Indoor Sport Centre impressed on to learners the important role that education plays in ensuring a successful life.

The Department of Community Safety also assured the students that they will keep their school areas safe for learning and free from drugs.
