With a long list of awards to its credit, this film has been touted by some as one of the best films made last year.

I’m still not sure it enters my top 10 list, but it wasn’t awful.

Jackson ‘Jack’ Maine, a famous country music singer privately battling an alcohol and drug addiction, stumbles into a drag bar after one of his shows and discovers Ally performing.

Through an odd series of events, Jack creates the opportunity to meet her.

They then spend the evening sitting in a deserted parking lot, talking about the problems Ally has singing her own material.

Having invited her to his next show, and to go on tour with him, the two strike up a romantic relationship and Jack takes her under his wing.

Ally is soon performing with Jack during his concerts and is an instant hit with his fans.

One thing leads to another and Ally finds herself branching out into a solo career which soon eclipses Jack’s since she is neither drinking nor doing drugs.

While Jack tries to support Ally’s new career, he disapproves of her new pop image and music, which has been nominated for three Grammy Awards.

Possibly one of the most poignant moments of the film is Ally making her acceptance speech at the Grammys while Jack claws his way onto the stage to get to her and then promptly wets his pants and passes out.

There are moments of genuine genius when the story touches on various parts of the human condition – love, addiction, suicide and guilt – but Lady Gaga seems to be trying too hard to be something she isn’t – a great actress – to make the movie a future classic.

The film is interesting enough to keep the viewer’s attention to the end, but I’m not sure it will ever become a movie people watch over and over again.

As someone who likes Bradley Cooper’s work, but has no love of Lady Gaga, it’s a hit-and-miss movie that you’ll have to make your own mind up about.
