Club championships at Springs Country Club

Fifty-three golfers turned up for the two-day event and many praised the condition of the course.

The Springs Country Club held their annual club championships this past weekend.

Delano Kotze and Ilana Prinsloo were able to defend their titles and once again emerged as champions.

Fifty-three golfers turned up for the two-day event and many praised the condition of the course.

Club captain Deon Kotze says the improved course is a result of the hard work that’s been put in over the past year and a half.

“The course is looking the best it’s been in for the longest time,” says Deon.

The condition of the course didn’t mean the players had it easy.

Prinsloo says: “I was a bit stressed in the beginning, but the second day was better.”

For the C-Division champion, Nelis van Dyk, the win was a long time coming.

“I’ve been playing here for 10 years and I wasn’t sure if I was going to win,” says van Dyk.

B-Division champion Chris Nkosi says it was a remarkable change from when he first arrived at the Springs Country Club.

“I was a caddy here in the 1960s and today I’m a champion.

“I never thought I would win, but I had a long time to prepare for it.

“The course was very forgiving, even in the rough,” says Nkosi.

For the men’s champion, Kotze, the win was a nice homecoming.

Delano has been playing in the amateur leagues in the US and only arrived in the country two days ago.

“I was confident about the title and I’m happy.

“While I’m in the country, I’m going to play in a few more tournaments before I go back in two months’ time.

“I’m going to play in the US Amateur competition and try to qualify for the US Open,” says Delano.
