EMPD says millennials and Generation Z should help the computer illiterate

“Relying wholly on the department would lead to an untenable situation of long queues for those requiring assistance. Making more officials available to assist would not be ideal,” says Kgasago.

With the announcement that renewals of driver’s licences and vehicle licences will be done online from the beginning of this month through the ENatis system, many who are computer illiterate were left wondering how they would cope.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago says plans are afoot for the installation of kiosks with computers at all Drivers Licensing and Testing Centres for the convenience of clients.

“Evidently, not all the clients are versed in using a computer thus officials will be available to give assistance.

“What we must not forget is that online bookings can be done via computers in the comfort of your home or office, through using cellphones, at internet cafes or with the assistance of driving schools.

“Besides, most families have in their midst millennials and Generation Z who are well-versed with modern technology to assist family members who are computer illiterate.

“Relying wholly on the department would lead to an untenable situation of long queues for those requiring assistance. Making more officials available to assist would not be ideal,” says Kgasago.

In the event of the ENatis system being down, there, unfortunately, doesn’t exist contingency plans since applications and appointments have to be in the system for them to be valid.

Under normal circumstances, the ENatis system would be off for a few hours a day unless more serious instances, such as cable theft, occur, in which case a day or two would be needed to get the system back online.
