Breaking news: Springs Monster gets 35 years behind bars

The sentence marks the end of a story that began in May 2014, when police removed the two children and their three younger siblings from the couple’s house after the 11-year-old boy asked one of the neighbours for help.

Judgement was handed down today at the North Gauteng High Court.

According to The Citizen, the Springs Monster was sentenced to 35 years in prison while his ex-wife received a suspended sentence of five years.

The man was handed the lengthy sentence for defeating the ends of justice, child abuse, child neglect and possession of drugs.

His ex-wife, who has been accused of not doing enough to stop the abuse, but was also herself battered, was given a suspended sentence of five years based on certain conditions.

Their children, through their affidavits, expressed a deep hatred for their parents.

The sentence marks the end of a story that began in May 2014, when police removed the two children and their three younger siblings from the couple’s house after the 11-year-old boy asked one of the neighbours for help.

The NPAs Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Louw-Mjonondwane, told journalists at the High Court in Pretoria this morning, “As the NPA we are satisfied with the sentence imposed to both the accused, the father and mother from the so-called Springs House of Horrors.

Accused one, the father, received an effective imprisonment term of 35 years and we believe it’s a sentence that sends a strong message to parents out there who neglect their children.”
