Metro clarifies that they charge 25 per cent of income for rent at old age homes

Gadebe says those with questions, or concerns about their rentals should engage with the human settlements department official administering the respective unit.

The metro has now stated they charge 25 per cent of their tenants’ income instead of the five per cent they initially claimed.

The Addie received numerous tips and calls from elderly residents who said they were charged much more than five per cent.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says, “In case of the income of the tenant (single or combined) being R4 000 and over, the rentals are in accordance with the rental structure for the specific unit and complex.

“If the income of the tenant is below R1 500, the rental will be the levy only.

“In case of the income (whether single or combined) being between R1 501 and R4 000, the rental will be 25 per cent plus levy.”

Gadebe says those with questions, or concerns about their rentals should engage with the human settlements department official administering the respective unit.

In the course of our investigation, it has become clear the 25 per cent rate residents are charged is simply unaffordable for many as they depend on their Sassa grants to get them through the month.

The Addie will continue to engage with the metro to get more clarity on the matter.
