Cyclists test themselves in the SGHS MTB Challenge in Nigel

Cyclists competed in the 15km, 30km or 60km race at the annual Springs Girls High School's annual mountain bike race.

Cyclists and runners of all ages braved the cold and windy conditions on Saturday morning at the Springs Girls High School Mountain Bike Race.

The weather did not dampen the enthusiasm as 144 cyclists and 40 runners eagerly awaited the start of the race.

Cyclists could either participate in the 15km, 30km or 60km race.

In the u-12 category, Theo van Tonder came first with a time of 00:50:2.

Zirk Naudé was the runner-up and Jana du Toit was third.

Mongezi Ngwenya was victorious in the men’s 30km category and finished the race with a time of 01:10:15

Calvin Hutton and Jonathan Janse van Rensburg were second and third respectively.

Karen Bradshaw was the winner in the women’s 30km category with a time of 01:37:07

Second place went to Teresa Schoeman and Belinda Benson was third.

Charl Marais proved himself to the best as he won the men’s 60km category in 02:12:52

Coming in just a few seconds behind him was Bruce Viljoen with a time of 02:12:58

Rounding off the top three was André de Villiers.

In the women’s 60km category, Elizma Wheeler was the first to cross the finish line with an impressive time of 02:55:15.

Anja de Roode took second place and Madelein Walker came third. The aim of the challenge was to raise money for learners who struggle to pay their school fees and help other people in need.

Race organiser Mariaan Labuschagne says the race was a team effort that could not have been done without the help of various sponsors and clubs.

The race also formed part of the school’s community work.

“As a school, it’s important for us to be balanced and not just focus on the academics but also sport and teach girls to give back to the community,” says Labuschagne.
