Mother arrested

A 23-year-old woman from Daggafontein informal settlement is facing a charge of murder after dumping her premature baby in a toilet.

According to Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora, the woman was about six months pregnant when she decided to abort the baby.

“According to information we have, the woman visited an illegal abortion clinic on Sunday to terminate the pregnancy and was given pills to drink at home,” says Capt Ramphora.

He says the woman’s older sister states that after drinking the pills, the women went into labour. The sister assisted with the birth, but rushed off afterwards as there was other things that needed her attention, leaving her sister alone with the newborn.

“It is alleged that the woman wrapped her (live) premature baby in her night gown and she then dumped the baby inside the toilet,” adds Capt Ramphora.

He says police and paramedics received a call from the woman’s sister after she got home and found the baby in the toilet.

“The baby was declared dead on the scene by paramedics and the woman is under police guard at the Far East Rand Hospital as it is alleged that she lost too much blood after giving birth,” Capt Ramphora says.

A case of murder has been opened.
