Markville Flats lift ordeal is almost over

"Our prayers have been answered, we are just so grateful," says van Biljon.

Residents of the Markville Flats will finally get a new lift after waiting for 26 months.

The building houses elderly residents who have struggled up and down the endless flights of stairs.

Some residents have limited mobility and those who live on the fifth floor have to climb 80 steps to get to their flats.

After numerous delays, Themba Gadebe, the spokesperson for the metro says it was becoming increasingly expensive to fix the lift and it was cheaper to install a new one altogether.

“A contractor has been appointed to install new lifts.

“The elevator project started on April 11.

“Site preparation works will start in the first week of May.

“The steel has been ordered from abroad and will take between six and eight weeks to arrive in South Africa.

“It should be noted that there are no lift manufacturing companies in South Africa and thus material has to be ordered from abroad,” says Gadebe.

When told about this, resident Linda van Biljon was ecstatic that they will be getting a new lift soon.

“Our prayers have been answered and we are just so grateful.

“Thank you, we are very happy,” says van Biljon.
