Taxis cause chaos on Nigel Road

Taxis not using the taxi rank nearby.

Business owners on Nigel Road are frustrated with the congestion caused by the taxis on Nigel Road.

The taxis are stopping in front of their businesses to load and unload passengers.

The taxi drivers are doing this regardless of the taxi rank that is less than 300m away.

“In the morning, the taxis use the left-hand lane as a space to drop off, pick up and exchange passengers.

“This blocks the entrance to the businesses that are located on that road.

“When you ask them to move, they either swear at you or threaten you,” says Paul Joubert, a concerned community member.

He also mentions between 7am and 8am, there are approximately 150 taxis that use this route, and in the afternoon between 4pm and 7pm, there are approximately 200 taxis.

Joubert is concerned that someone will die as a result of the congestion.

He alleges that there have been about seven accidents on this road since January as a result of the congestion.

“Two taxis have already collided and it seems like someone has to die before the police or the EMPD does something,” says Joubert.

The EMPD didn’t respond in time for publication. However, chairman of the Springs Taxi Association, Leonard Molo, says, “Taxi drivers must be respectful of all other road users.

“I will speak to the patrollers about the situation.

“The passengers are also to blame as they feel that the drivers are wasting time when they take them off their route and into the taxi rank.”
