Springsites save a life a unit at a time with SANBS at Springs Mall

#NewBlood campaign kicks off at Springs Mall.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) started its Easter blood donation drive at Springs Mall on Wednesday morning.

Human Rights Day signalled the start of the Easter holiday period, and the organisation set the target of collecting 4 500 units of blood on the day across the country.

The mass blood donation drive called #NewBlood was aimed at recruiting new donors.

Musa Methula brought her daughter Devotion Methula (4) along as she donated blood on Wednesday morning.

Another aim was to ensure there was enough safe blood in the country because the organisation typically experiences a shortage of blood over the holidays.

The people of Springs came out in their numbers to donate blood and all had different reasons for doing so.

“I started donating blood a couple of years ago and thought it was a good idea, so I just carried on,” says Gus Sunde.

For Michelle de Jager, her reason for donating is closer to home.

“My mum-in-law has lymph cancer so she needs platelets and blood transfusions, so I donate for her,” says de Jager.

Musa Methula donates blood as her way of showing gratitude for being alive and healthy.

“I’ve been donating for 30 years and I just value life.

“I feel blessed that I’m not chronically ill.

Schalk Janse van Vuuren (16) joins his father Gerrit Janse van Vuuren as they donate blood at the SANBS at Springs Mall.

“If I can just give anyone a chance to live, I will,” says Methula.

Overall, the SANBS Donor Centre at Springs Mall collected 79 units on the day.

Those who wish to donate blood can still do so at the centre.

They should be above the age of 16, weigh more than 50kg and practise a safe lifestyle.

The SANBS Donor Centre at Springs Mall can be found at shop u27.

They open from 9am until 4pm every day.
