Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck receive world-class multi-purpose court
Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck unviels new court.
The Grades Four to Six of Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck beat learners from over 400 schools to be crowned the fittest in the country.
Their prize? A world-class multi-purpose court.
Over 379 000 learners participated in the physical education challenge.
The aim of this challenge is to give children who otherwise would not have had the opportunity, to play sport.
Sport contributes to the holistic development of children and helps them perform academically.
This challenge is in partnership with Active Education and also provides training to teachers on how to do physical education in schools.
Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck was ecstatic to have won this competition.
“I think an initiative like this shows the willingness of corporates to engage with the lower levels and, through teamwork, help us address our shortcomings and challenges.
“Springs is considered small, but we have a lot to offer,” says the chairman of the school governing body, Japie Schmidt.
The school is looking forward to making use of this facility but are also allowing neighbouring schools to make use of it.
The court is built to last for at least 15 years and is made out of recyclable material.
Tennis, volleyball, basketball and soccer can all be played on this court.
School principal Herman Flemming was full of gratitude at the event on Friday morning and recognised the court as another avenue to support the growth of their learners.
“Today is a giant leap forward for us to develop our learners’ potential,” says Flemming.
