Springsite Tommy Booth is ready for the Dusi

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club hosted its annual Duzi Jozi Jol, a fun event incorporating some serious preparation for the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon, on February 4.

Springsite Tommy Booth and paddling partner Pieter Engelbrecht completed the 15km race, which was broken by a 3km running portage through the park near the dam.

The race was held at Emmarentia Dam and brought out everyone’s competitive spirit, resulting in some close finishes.

Although Booth and Engelbrecht missed a turn on the portage around the streets and through the veld, they still completed the race in 1:43, putting them among the top finishers.

The Dusi takes place from Thursday to Saturday this week.

Last year, with no water in parts of the waterways due to drought conditions, the paddlers were forced to run most of the course on day three, making portaging training an essential ingredient to a successful finish of this, the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.
