Policeman shot during hijacking shoot-out

Couple upset over shooting of policeman after their vehicle was hijacked.

A policeman was shot during a shoot-out between hijackers and the police in Spruitviewin Katlehong during the early hours of Sunday morning.

This happened after a tracking company informed the police about a hijacked VW Golf 5 spotted in the area.

According to Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the vehicle was hijacked in George Street, Springs Extension.

A couple arrived home at 2.30am, when they were approached by three suspects, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

Ramphora says when the couple noticed the firearm they ran to safety.

The suspects got into the couple’s VW Golf 5 and drove off.

“The victim immediately notified the tracking company who traced the vehicle to Spruitview,” says Ramphora.

When the police noticed the vehicle, a shoot-out followed which led to a policeman being shot.

The policeman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“The couple was upset and traumatised when they heard of the shooting,” says Ramphora.

No one was arrested.
