High-speed chase on Paul Kruger Highway in Springs

EMPD officer shot one suspect after a high-speed chase.

Two EMPD officers called for back-up after a high-speed chase on Paul Kruger highway where one of three suspects were shot on Tuesday.

One of the suspects broke into a Delmas businessman’s parked Chevrolet Utility at 1.57pm and ran away with a bag containing R65 000 in cash.

The suspect jumped into a white BMW parked in Fourth Avenue Geduld where his two accomplices were waiting for him.

EMPD officers Jabu Dladla and Japie van der Linde noticed the suspect jumping into the BMW and followed them.

A high-speed chase ended on Paul Kruger highway where the suspects started shooting at the officers who retaliated.

The driver of the vehicle was injured during the shootout.

The businessman withdrew R34 000 from a bank in Northmead, Benoni and drove to Geduld where he stopped to buy food.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesperson, the man had bought R3 000 worth of liquor for his business but had an additional R34 000 in cash in a bag in his vehicle.

While waiting for his food, he returned to his vehicle and saw a man getting out of his car with the bag containing the money.

Ramphora says the man chased the suspect but he jumped into a vehicle and sped off.

When police back up arrived at the scene they chased the injured driver’s two accomplices who ran away.

All three suspects were arrested and the money was recovered.

The injured driver was treated at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but was discharged on Wednesday.

All three suspects are currently in police cells where they will remain until their court appearance.

“We believe the three suspects followed the man from Northmead to Geduld,” says Ramphora.
