Volunteers run a good Stepping out for Cancer race

“It was all done in good faith to remember those who lost the cancer battle.”

Rotary Club of Springs hosted a Stepping out for Cancer 5km run and walk at Springs Boys’ High School on Saturday.

There were about 50 people who supported the event which started at 9am.

While the organisers waited for the first runners to enter the premises, they assisted the various stallholders to set up their stalls.

The Kattitude women made sure there was food available for the hungry participants.

The first runner to arrive was William Shaw who finished the race in 30 minutes.

Nine minutes later father and daughter Darren and Erin Penny (10) crossed the finish line.

Erin claims her long legs contributed to her winning the race with her father.

Runner Wendy Vosges, Danielle Swart, Lynette Loggenberg and Nicole Loggenberg say they support the run because it is for a good cause.

“We all have or know someone who has cancer,” she says.

Vosges and the rest of the group who ran say it was fun and good exercise.

“We are all grateful we were invited to the event by their friend Nicole,” she says.

Each runner received a medal and cancer ribbon at the end of the race.

Most of the runners tied their ribbons to the Rotary’s ‘Tree of Hope’.

Siobheanne Landsberg, Rotary Club of Springs president, said it was wonderful to see the people finish this race and tie their ribbons to the ‘Tree of Hope’.

“The event is all about creating awareness and to support the Cansa network.

She feels strongly about getting people moving.

“We should promote fitness in Springs,” she says.

The Tree of Hope was full of ribbons – medal ribbons or plain pink ribbons.

“It was all done in good faith to remember those who lost their battle with,” says Rotarian, Cheryl Havenga.
