Motorists driving through darkness on Nigel road

Despite numerous attempts to contact the municipality, motorists still travel in the dark on Nigel Road.

Motorists have complained about the streetlights on Nigel Road between Hagart Avenue and Allen Road in Selection Park, which have not been working for approximately 18 months.

According to Millicent Chauke, the streetlights have not been attended to by the municipality.

“The street lights have not been working for over a year. Despite our repeated complaints, the municipality has done nothing in this regard,” says Chauke.

Chauke says the dysfunctional street lights will encourage theft and other crime such as hijacking.

“I travel on the road every day. At night on my way home from work my biggest fear is falling victim to the tricks of criminals near the bridge.”

Another motorist Vincent Goodwill says the problem is serious for motorists using the road.

“This is a huge problem when driving past at night,” says Goodwill.

“You find some drivers jumping the robot on Hills Road and Nigel Road without even taking heed.”

Goodwill says the traffic lights on Nigel Road seem to be an ongoing problem. One week they work and the next week they are not working.

“For the whole month of September, the intersection on Nigel Road and Davis Drive had faulty traffic lights,” says Goodwill.

“These traffic light problems cause so much havoc for motorists when travelling to and from work – especially now that the schools have reopened.”

“Motorists who do not stop when approaching the intersection, are taking advantage that the traffic lights are not working. Soon we’ll be witnessing fatal crashes,” says Goodwill.

The metro failed to offer comment at the time of publishing.
