Springs residents frustrated with illegal dumping

Springs residents say they’re frustrated that no one is cleaning up the garbage that has been illegally dumped.

Residents have been swarmed by rodents and an unpleasant smell owing to masses of garbage covering an open piece of land at the Springs Avenue, on the corner of 9th Avenue and 6th Street.

Thelma Pitsiladis, a resident from the area suspects this is due to illegal dumping activities which have seemingly gone on for a long time without being attended to.

“The problem has been going on for years and it has gotten unbearable over the last few months in both the stench and amount of rodents,” says Pitsiladis.

She says when the municipality sends people to come clean, the workers only clean a small portion of the area, with no difference being done.

“They bring their workers to come clean but they don’t do it thoroughly, merely picking up sand and leaving the dirt lying around,” says Pitsiladis.

Pitsiladis says she has to put up with the horrible stench which is becoming worse by the day and exponentially worse on rainy days.

She adds that when she asked the municipality to close up the area she was told it didn’t belong to the metro, but she still sees the municipality vans every now and then.

“If they say that it doesn’t belong to Ekurhuleni then they should trace the owner because we cannot live like this.”

“When will they start taking are pleas seriously?

“They should at least put up a fence around the open space to stop the illegal dumping and squatters from making a mess out of this place,” says Pitsiladis.

The metro had not yet commented on the matter at the time of going to print.
