No elevator for Markville residents

Light at the end of the tunnel is dim.

Construction work to replace the elevator at the Markville housing complex has not started yet.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe stated previously that “we might start with construction in the third week of August”.

To date no comment has been received from the metro on whether their plans are still on schedule.

In a previous statement Gadebe mentioned they would opt to make use of the Enterprise Project Management Office – a metro department – to quote on the replacement of elevators in eight buildings, including Markville.

He went on to say the Bill of Qualities would be drafted for each of the metro properties.

The scope and report from the consultants expected to be completed on July 21, were to be followed by the approval of the Bid Specification Committee (BSC).

Two weeks were allowed for the BSC’s approval.

Markville residents are still waiting patiently for news from the metro as to when construction will start.

According to Joey Vorster (65) they have not received any news from the metro yet.

“Since the last article was published in the Addie in July, there has been no news whatsoever,” she says.

The residents were excited to hear construction might start in the third week of August.

“We will just have to wait patiently for them to notify us when the elevator will be replaced,” says Vorster.

The complex has been without an elevator since the beginning of February 2016.

In December the metro’s Department of Human Settlements apologised to the residents for the inconvenience they have experienced.

Vorster says although they all suffer as a result of the elevator being out of order, they continue to wait in anticipation for something to be done.
