Junior soccer teams on top of their game

Two local junior soccer teams beat their opponents on home ground.

Springs Old Buys Soccer Club hosted two junior games at Old Boys on Saturday.

The u-10 team played against Benoni All Stars u-10 team and won their match, three goals to two.

At half time the scores were level at 2-2 as team captain Matthew Naude and Troy Halkerd each scored a goal for Old Boys.

The second half was hard fought but Callum McCallistair was quick to score another goal putting Old Boys in the lead by 3-2 with the winning goal.

The goalkeeper, Caleb Preston, made some brilliant saves as Benoni All Stars put pressure on Old Boys near the end of the match, keeping the score at 3-2.

Team manager Deon Naude says Troy Halkerd was named man of the match by the coaching staff.

“He performed brilliantly on the day,” he says.

The u-10 team from Old Boys have played nine league games this season and have won six of the nine matches so far.

SOB will travel to Actonville to play the away leg of the league against Benoni All Stars on Saturday.

The team will play against Benoni Northerns on July 22 at SOB grounds.

SOB Premier u-9 team’s final score was 6-2 against Birch Acres.

Coach Nino Lopes says he is proud of his players who showed their worth on the field.

Quewyn Magalhaes scored three goals and performed a hat-trick.

A goal from Teboho Khanye and another two from Landré Potgieter completed the match.

Quewyn was awarded the man of the match.
