People open hearts to geese and ducks

The geese and ducks will have enough food to eat for the winter.

A local businessman recently donated mealies to the geese and ducks at the George Sutter Park duck pond.

Kathy Preston, who has been taking care of her feathered friends, was overwhelmed by the generous donation.

“The donation, from Cliff Carr, is a clear indication of someone who cares about these birds,” she says.

She says she was stressed about not having enough mealies for the birds to see them through the winter.

The generous donation will help Preston to feed them without any problems.

Preston says so far the birds are doing quite well and it is amazing to see the reaction when she arrives to feed them.

Caring for her feathered friends has become part of Preston’s life.

She says she cannot imagine her days without going to the pond to feed them.

Twice a day she is welcomed by her feathered friends who follow her wherever she walks in the enclosed pond.

She says once they have eaten, they go for a swim and then take a nap.

Preston also receives a weekly donation of bread and lettuce from José Fernandes.

“The green leaves and bread are such a treat for the birds after they have eaten their mealies.

“We are deeply thankful that we are not short of food and for the donations,” says Preston.
