Robbers shoot Springs policeman

Springs police arrested a 43-year-old suspect after a shoot-out with four armed robbers, on Saturday, following a house robbery in Pollak Park.

Two policeman were on routine patrol when they were informed of a robbery in progress, in Service Road, Pollak Park, at 8.10pm.

The police gave chase and the four occupants of the BMW opened fire on them, wounding one of the officers in the leg.

Paramedics were called to the scene and the injured policeman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

As police pursued the vehicle, the three passengers managed to get out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The police arrested one of them and recovered a firearm he had discarded as he fled.

“The serial number on the firearm we recovered was filed off,” says Ramphora.

The BMW was later found abandoned near KwaThema.

“Preliminary investigations reveal the four suspects, armed with pistols, had just robbed a house where they took two cellphones and the family’s BMW,” says Ramphora.
