Bowling clubhouse regains former glamour

The old Springs Municipal Bowling Club is currently undergoing renovations.

Hannes Gouws (52) is in the process of upgrading the clubhouse and intends to develop a minigolf (putt-putt) court on one bowling green.

He started negotiating with the metro with regard to leasing the property six months ago.

The lease agreement between the metro and Gouws was recently approved and signed.

Gouws found the building in a dilapidated condition with all the light fittings, plugs and electrical cables missing.

“Even the ablution facilities were vandalised and all the fittings were broken and removed,” says Gouws.

He immediately started with renovations of the building.

One section of the clubhouse has already been converted into a fully operational karate club.

Plans for the renovation of the remainder of the building are already in place.

“We plan to make provision to accommodate children after school where they can do their homework and enjoy something to eat,” says Gouws.

Part of their future plan is to use the second bowling green for mini hockey for juniors.

Their aim is to create a safe environment where the youth in the area can interact with each other and develop a love for sport.

“The whole idea behind the upgrade of this facility is to keep children off the streets after school,” says Gouws.

The once dilapidated clubhouse is slowly starting to regain some of its former glamour.
