Kattitude makes a difference with feral cats

Three Springs women are involved in the care of feral cats and are part of Kattitude, a non-profitable organisation (NPO) in and around Springs.

Tanya Kitching, Mandy Thorpe and Sandra de Freitas-Mitrosparas met a few months ago and decided to bring awareness to the community regarding feral cats.

“We would like to get the community to come together and help us,” she says.

The trio started Kattitude in June and say the purpose of the NPO is to trap, sterilise and release feral cats.

“This helps to keep the population down in the feral community, stops unwanted kittens and also the spreading of diseases amongst these poor creatures,” says Mandy.

The trio feeds the feral cats as the animals do not have proper nutrition.

“We solely rely on donations for food and financial aid,” says Tanya.

They also deal with cats needing to be euthanised due to illnesses or poor health.

At the moment they have four traps to do all the work that needs to be done.

They have made an impact, but not as much as they would like, due to lack of resources.

“To date 56 cats have been sterilised,” says Tanya.

Lisa Russouw, fundraiser for Kattitude, says the trio is doing amazing work and their passion shines through.

“They use their own petrol, riding up and down to feed various feral colonies, collect trapped cats and take them to the vet to be sterilised,” she says.

She says that at times they have to pay for the sterilisations and food for the cats out of their pockets should there be insufficient funding.

“Not all people they deal with understand their mission but they depend on donations to continue the wonderful job they started,|” says Lisa.
