1D wants to entertain you

A local Springs musician just launched his second studio recording.

He’s a Springs man of many talents, but music is what makes Wandile Mathe (29) tick.

Performing as an independent solo artist under the stage name ‘1D’, he’s just finished his creative ‘hibernation’ period and is ready to wow his audience with his newly launched recording, entitled The Reign.

“1D is ready to get out there,” Wandile says enthusiastically.

Fans can expect a fresh infusion of jazz, pop and R&B – which originated from a home studio in Northriding.

After graduating from Springs Boys High School in 2005, Wandile initially studied B.Comm Finance at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), but abandoned ship in his third year to pursue his newly discovered love for performance.

With several performances under his belt while at UJ, Wandile still felt that artistry might not be in his grasp, but said he had two realisations which guided his life-changing decision.

The first was when he recognised for himself that he had talent; and the second was when other people started realising it – and encouraging him to pursue it professionally.

After an interview at the Academy of Sound Engineering in Johannesburg, he was granted a partial-sponsorship and completed two years at the school, which is also where he met his producer, Brian Mushongera.

Since then, he’s performed numerous gigs with his five-piece band, including opening for one of his idols: Khuli Chana.

“It was a sign that I was working in the right direction, when he came up to me and said that he likes what I’m doing,” says Wandile.

Fans can follow 1D on his social media pages and expect a music video soon.
