Community gets Christmas hampers

As part of Projek Uitkoms, local community hero, Marsha Horn, handed out 72 Christmas hampers to underprivileged families in the Geduld community on Saturday.

With the help of the Springs Park Rotary Club and a Strubenvale grocery store, local do-gooder Marsha Horn, was able to hand out Christmas hampers to 72 families in the Geduld community on Saturday.

As part of her initiative, Projek Uitkoms, Marsha currently feeds approximately 150 children from Laerskool PAM Brink twice per week, and also invites the area’s homeless people for a warm meal as often as possible.

She has been serving the community for over 14 years and on one occasion considered throwing in the towel, which ultimately resulted in her feeding children an additional weekly meal.

“My husband has been a huge support and without it this would not have been possible,” she says.

Martha receives monthly help from the Rotarians, a local restaurant, and also sells second-hand clothing she receives as donations, as one meal costs her up to R600.

The buckets handed out contained instant noodles, maize meal, soya mince, stock cubes, glucose biscuits, brown onion soup, flavoured powder drink sachets, rice, tea, salt, chicken spice, steak and chop spice, baked beans and chips.

“It’s not much but every little bit helps,” she says.

She made the decision to only feed primary school aged children but continues to feed several that have gone off to high school.

“Children are my passion,” Marsha says.

She considers herself to be strict towards the kids, as her goal is to only feed hungry children, so those who do not eat their vegetables do not get a hotdog on Fridays.
