Deaths reported in flash floods – tips to follow when caught in a flood

Ekurhuleni was plunged into in chaos yesterday (Wednesday) when heavy rainfall caused flooding in various areas.

Springs seemed to come off relatively lightly from the floods and residents were lucky enough to escape much of the damage that was caused by the downpour.

The only reported flooding was that of the Geduld subway in Fourth Avenue.

At the time of publishing, no other floods were reported in Springs.

Some of Springs’ residents measured the rainfall in their respective areas:

• In Selcourt, Drikus Oosthuizen measured 22mm of rain.

• Benn Krüger measured 30mm of rain in Dersley.

• 60mm of rain was measured by Anne van Vuuren in Geduld.

The Springs Advertiser’s sister newspaper, the Boksburg Advertiser, reported that at least two people drowned in a flash flood in Linksfield, according to Nana Radebe, the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services’ spokesman.

The Boksburg Advertiser also reported that more than 100 cars were submerged in water after being pushed off an embankment on the N3 highway.
